A feeling of dizziness and unsteadiness is common with conditions such as vertigo. However, unlike other movement disorders, vertigo isn’t necessarily just being lightheaded or woozy. In this case, the world around you will feel like it’s spinning, or that you yourself are moving or spinning while standing still.
The cause of vertigo needs to be factored in when deciding if a trip to the emergency department is necessary. A health care provider may need to perform a few tests or prescribe medicines to treat the vertigo and its side effects.
To prevent the vertigo from worsening, keep still and move slowly to avoid sudden movements. Avoid bright lights and sit down whenever the dizzy spells get bad.
If the vertigo persists, you may need to call your doctor, especially if it’s interfering with your daily activities. If you have previously never had vertigo, or you also have a lot of the other symptoms listed above, call 911 to seek immediate medical assistance.
This list is not inclusive of all possible medical emergencies. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
